Longer-term implications of US data availability

All - like many folks, I am trying to process the many changes happening in the US political (and particularly for this forum, federal data-related) landscape. Put aside for a moment the potential of data tampering and the obvious ethical implications associated with this.

What concerns do you have about next year, five years, ten years from now?

I am grappling with this in an objective way (or trying to) - hoping to converse with this group and learn from a systemic perspective.

Hey @kbaker thank you so much for sharing this. Absolutely agree that the changes in US data landscape are happening so quickly and unusually that it is hard to process.

We’ve shared a post over here with links to many of the datasets that have now become harder to find.

I agree that this is the time for an important conversation on what data we need, where we want to get that data, and where we want to store that data. Looking forward to hearing what others are thinking.

I am wondering if the new administration will rescind SPD15 which would have added detailed race/ethnicity categories as the default data collection, among other changes. Even if it is not rescinded, I am worried about data quality due to distrust in how the data will be used. Is it better to delay collection if doing it “wrong” could have long-term harms?
