The wonderful folks at Every Woman Every Child Latin America and the Caribbean (EWEC-LAC) have created a useful and practical guide for thinking through some of these choices and how to actually do the calculations once you choose a method. The guide does not assume a very high level of expertise and the examples are largely done in Excel so you don’t need advanced statistical computing tools. I highly recommend a look through this whether you’re a beginning or an advanced practitioner.
